In my case, I fought, most often losing. But because I was willing to take a beating, I started to get left alone. The bullies didn't want battle scars even if they knew they were going to win. Most of my encounters, I had no where to run.... figuring I was in for it, I might as well get a few licks in.
Later in life (especially in my twenties), I volunteered to be a punching bag a few times as well. Funny how quitting drinking seems to have completely resolved my occasional challenges with getting walloped in the streets.
